Printmaking samples from my In Spite of Myself series. I’d only learned relief printing a few months prior, by accident. Carving became a way for me to slow down—to be still, work with my hands, and sit with my feelings. The inevitable knicks and cuts along the way felt well worth it.
I’m interested in bringing that same physical, contemplative process into my ongoing work by carving portraits and photographs from Remembering Forward into wood.

In Spite of Myself is an artist zine and intimate companion to Jasmine Gabrielle Washington’s in-progress exploration of grief, surrender, resistance, and transformation. Composed of fragments of writing, relief prints, and self-portraiture, the work honors what survives in process—the slow, stubborn act of becoming whole again. Each copy is signed, numbered, and self-published by the artist. Printed in full color on premium stock, this second edition continues the story of restoration through making, memory, and grace. This edition carries new writings, imagery, and marks made in conversation with what it means to come undone and still return to self.
