Time and Time Again considers time as more than a structure for control, asking how time is imposed, experienced, valued, given, taken, shared, and redistributed. Featuring works from Elyse Spencer’s, Take a Walk With Me and Roshaun Stephenson’s, AYNOS Records, the exhibition brings together two distinct practices that consider the lived experiences of incarceration and gun(shot) violence, respectively. Across the artists’ practices and curator, Jasmine Gabrielle Washington’s research into care, the exhibition considers the unequal ways time is experienced and showcases the questions: Who gets to determine what time is worth? What do we give our time to? What are we required to give our time to? And what becomes possible when time and care are given back?

Breaking from the traditional use of “time and time again”, the exhibition considers what happens in the time that follows. More people will experience incarceration and gun(shot) violence as time moves forward; these realities cannot always be prevented through the work represented here. What can be changed is how people are supported in experiencing their lives afterward. Creating space to speak, grieve, remember, imagine, and be witnessed becomes a form of care—and a form of time redistribution.

The artists’ practices demonstrate how what we are working through ourselves can become a means of creating space for others. Time circulates through listening, witnessing, storytelling, grieving, caregiving, and making. To give someone time is to acknowledge that their experience is worthy of attention; to redistribute time is to create access to the space, attention, and possibility that circumstances may have denied them.

What do we keep giving our time to—and what becomes possible because we do?

Is time repetitive—or does returning to something change it?
